I’m a researcher on the Health AI team at OpenAI. I’m also a faculty member at the University of Calgary.
I joined OpenAI in November 2023. Public work includes HealthBench, a health evaluation used across the industry; improving model performance in health; and one of the first real-world studies of clinicians using language models in patient care.
Before OpenAI:
- I co-founded the digital health company Alethea Medical, which is now used by 50% of family physicians in Alberta.
- I did a PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where I was a Rhodes Scholar.
- As a first-year PhD student, I joined the faculty of the University of Calgary to lead a research group in health informatics. My research group obtained nearly $2M USD in funding and published more than 20 articles.
- We used large-scale data to study infection and immunity, with the World Health Organization and the Public Health Agency of Canada.
- We also studied how to automate evidence synthesis, a direction some team members are continuing with the company Otto SR.
